MATERIAL SAFETY DATASHEET

Revision: 1
Revision date: May 26, 2003

1. CHEMICAL PRODUCT

  • Product name: HFA 62
  • Product type: "Yellow" dye
  • Intended use: Marking of gasoil

2. COMPOSITION/ INFORMATION ON INGREDIENTS

  • Solvent Yellow: CAS 34432-92-3, WT% 60-66%
  • Heavy solvent Naphta: CAS 64742-94-5, WT% 40-34%

3. HAZARDS IDENTIFICATION

  • Primary route of exposure/entry: Eye, skin, inhalation
  • Skin/Eye: Vapour may irritate the eyes. Liquid is irritating and potentially damaging to eyes. Liquid may irritate and dry the skin. Prolonged contact may lead to burns and blisters and may aggravate dermatitis.
  • Ingestion: May lead to headache, dizziness, nausea and abdominal pain.
  • Inhalation: vapours may irritate the respiratory tract may lead to headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting and unconsciousness. High vapour concentrations are anaesthetic and may have other central nervous system effects including death.

4. FIRST AID MEASURES

  • Eyes: Immediately wash with fresh water for at least 15 minutes and seek medical attention if irritation persists.
  • Skin: Remove contaminated clothing as soon as possible; this will be a fire hazard. Wash exposed
  • Skin thoroughly with soap and water. If irritation persists, consult a physician. Launder contaminated clothing before re-use. Badly contaminated leather shoes should be discarded.
  • Inhalation: In event of over-exposure remove individual to fresh air, taking steps necessary to protect the rescuer. If unconscious but breathing, place in recovery position. If breathing stops, administer artificial respiration. Seek medical assistance.
  • Ingestion: If this material is swallowed DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING. If vomiting begins, lower victim's head in an effort to prevent vomit from entering lungs. IMMEDIATILY SEEK MEDICAL ASSISTANCE. If unconscious do not attempt to administer fluids, place in recovery position and protect airway.

5. FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES

  • Extinguishing media: Use water spray, dry chemical, foam or carbon dioxide. NEVER USE WATER IN A JET.
  • Special fire fighting procedure: Wear impervious clothing and self contained breathing apparatus. Use water to keep fire exposed containers cool. If a leak or spill has not ignited use water spray to disperse the vapours and to provide protection for personnel attempting to stop a leak. Take care not to spread the fire with water.
  • Fire and explosion hazards: Products of combustion may contain carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and other toxic materials. Do not enter enclosed or confined space without proper protective equipment including respiratory protection. Solvent vapours are an explosion hazard. Keep material away from sources of ignition. Closed containers may explode from vapour pressure when exposed to extreme heat. Vapours may travel great distances and ignite and flashback to source.

6. ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES

Remove all sources of ignition. Ensure adequate ventilation. Shut off source and contain with sand or earth to prevent entry to water sources and sewers. Contain spill immediately in smallest area possible. Recover as much of the product itself as possible by such method as vacuuming, using an approved vacuum pump powered by a flame proof motor, followed by soaking up of residual fluids by use of absorbent materials. Remove contaminated items including contaminated soil and place in proper containers for disposal. Avoid washing, draining or directing material to sewers.

7. HANDLING AND STORAGE

Handle in a well ventilated area or provide efficient exhaust ventilation. Wear long sleeved, chemical resistant gloves, and also safety glasses if there is a risk of splashing. Avoid prolonged contact with the skin. No smoking , no open flames. Store in properly designed tanks or approved tightly closed containers in cool, well ventilated situations away from sources of ignition. Protect from static discharges. All hazard precautions given here must be applied to handling of empty containers.

8. EXPOSURE CONTROLS/ PERSONAL PROTECTION

  • Respiratory Unprotected inhalation of vapour should be avoided. Self contained breathing apparatus or other suitable protection must be worn if TLV levels are exceeded. Provide adequate ventilation.
  • Eye protection: Goggles to BS2092C are required when exposed to vapour or when splashing is possible. Eye wash should be provided.
  • Skin protection: Unprotected exposure by skin contact to liquid or vapour should be avoided. Protective clothing consisting of impervious gloves (nitrile rubber or PVC) and coveralls should be used when necessary to avoid skin contact.
